A retainer is what keeps the result you spent one to two years earning. Teeth are held in bone by fibers that remember where they used to be, and without retention they drift back. Dorfman Orthodontic Group provides fixed and removable retainers, replacements, and our Retainers for Life program to patients from Huntingdon Valley at our Southampton and Bensalem offices.
Types of Retainers
Clear removable retainers. Thin, vacuum-formed trays that fit over the teeth like an aligner. They are nearly invisible, comfortable, and the most commonly delivered retainer today. They come out to eat and are worn nightly long term.
Hawley retainers. An acrylic body with a visible wire across the front teeth. More durable than clear retainers, adjustable, and long-lasting, which is why they are still the right answer for certain cases.
Fixed (bonded) retainers. A thin wire bonded behind the front teeth, most often on the lower arch. Nothing to remember and nothing to lose, which is why we recommend them for patients with a high relapse risk, such as adults treated for previous relapse. They need a floss threader and a dental cleaning routine that accounts for them.
Many patients end up with both: a bonded lower wire and a clear upper retainer worn at night.
Why Retention Is Not Optional
The fibers pull back
Periodontal ligament fibers stretched during tooth movement take many months to reorganize. Until they do, they are actively trying to return teeth to their old positions.
Bone needs time to settle
Newly remodeled bone around each root continues to mature after the appliances come off. Retention protects the teeth during that window.
Teeth drift throughout life
Lower front crowding creeps in with age whether or not you ever had braces. Nightly retainer wear is what stops it.
Replacing a retainer is far cheaper than retreating
The most common story we hear from adults is a lost retainer at nineteen and crooked lower teeth by twenty-five. A replacement retainer costs a fraction of a second course of treatment.
Retainers protect a guarantee
Our Smile Forever Guarantee depends on consistent retainer wear and regular check visits, which is another practical reason to keep the routine.
Getting Your Retainer at DOG Ortho
Same-week delivery. Records are taken the day braces come off or the final aligner is finished, and retainers are delivered right away so nothing has a chance to shift.
Fitting and instructions. We check the fit, adjust as needed, and go through wear schedule, cleaning, and storage. Full-time wear is typical at first, then nights indefinitely.
Retainer checks. We look at fit and wear at follow-up visits. A retainer that has become tight is the earliest sign of drift and the easiest point to correct it.
Replacements. Lost or cracked retainers are replaced quickly. Retainer insurance for replacements is available; see financial information.
Who Needs a Retainer?
Everyone who has had orthodontic treatment. Age, treatment type, and how mild the original problem was do not change that. Patients treated with aligners need retention exactly as much as patients treated with braces.
We also see patients from Huntingdon Valley and across Montgomery County who were treated elsewhere years ago and need a replacement retainer, a repair to a broken bonded wire, or an assessment of how far teeth have already drifted. You do not need to have been our patient for us to help, and no referral is required.
Making Retainer Wear Stick
The patients who keep their results for decades all do the same few things.
They keep the retainer next to the toothbrush, because a retainer that lives in a drawer gets forgotten. They wear it every night rather than most nights; the teeth that drift are the ones given a week off here and there. They keep the case with them, because a retainer left on a nightstand at a hotel is a retainer lost.
They also come back when something feels off. A retainer that suddenly feels tight is early evidence of movement and is far easier to address in the first month than the first year.
And they replace it before it fails completely. Clear retainers wear out; cracks along the biting surface mean it is near the end of its life. Ordering a replacement while the current one still fits means the new one only has to hold, not correct.
Why Choose DOG Ortho for Retainers

Frequently Asked Questions About Retainers
How long do I have to wear my retainer?
Full-time initially, as directed, then nightly for the long term. Teeth drift for life, so retention is a lifelong habit rather than a phase.
What if I stopped wearing mine years ago?
Bring it in. If it still fits, we will check it. If teeth have shifted, we will show you exactly how much and what options exist, which is often a short retreatment.
How do I clean a retainer?
Brush it with a soft brush and cool water, never hot water, which warps the plastic. Soak periodically with a retainer cleaning tablet.
My retainer feels tight. Is that bad?
It means teeth have moved slightly. Wear it more, and call us. Never force a retainer that no longer seats; that can damage teeth or the appliance.
Can I get a replacement if I lost mine?
Yes, quickly. Call us as soon as you notice; the longer you wait the more likely the new one will need to correct movement rather than just hold.
Do bonded retainers ever come loose?
Occasionally a bond fails at one tooth. It is a fast repair, and worth booking promptly; see our emergency care page.
